Basic Information
Lakeland School District - Kristen Lewis
Media Literacy, 2140
Room 120
Introduction
In this course, we’ll come together to learn how to become digital-savvy critical thinkers that understand the power of media. Through this course, students in grades 9-12 will develop the skills to assess, analyze, evaluate, even create, media messages, moving them beyond media consumerism. Students will analyze and evaluate the messages communicated through all forms of media, from news to advertising, in all mediums, especially digital and internet-based media. Moreover, students will learn to utilize digital media, such as blogs, social media, and other tools, to inform audiences, applying technology tools to communicate and persuade. This course will prepare students to navigate their digital, consumer-driven lives.
Course Rationale
In order to be responsible citizens, it is imperative that individuals learn how navigate the digital world.
Course Goals
Methods of Instruction
New information will be presented in lecture format and reinforced through multimedia explorations. This is a very student centered course that relies heavily on class discussion, student projects and presentations.
Course Component Specifics and Requirements
MLA format will be used for research projects. Failure to properly cite your work is considered plagiarism and it will not be tolerated. Cheating will also not be tolerated. Cheating is considered copying assignments from other students and using restricted means (phone, internet, others, etc.) to gain information during an assessment. Complete all work honestly and independently as plagiarism and cheating will result in a zero for that assignment or assessment.
Please bring your Chromebook or another computer/tablet to class everyday. Phones are not permitted. All assignments will be distributed and collected electronically. Arriving on time, with proper materials, a positive attitude, and a willingness to actively participate in lessons is of vital importance. In order to do well in this class, try your best, follow instructions, respect others, remain positive and ask questions.
Attendance and Make-Up Work
Attendance will impact your grade in this class. Arrive on time and attend class everyday. Missing class means missing important information. If you are absent from class, work needs to be promptly made up. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed and make it up. If you miss class, you can check Google Classroom or Infinite Campus for missed work. If you need assistance, feel free to contact me.
