The Role of the School Nurse

The school nurse supports student success by providing health care assessment, intervention, and follow up for all children within the school setting. The goal of the school nurse is to promote optimum health for our students through the combined efforts of the home, school, and community. The Lakeland School District Health Program has, as it's primary goal, the protection, maintenance and improvement of the health status of school aged children.  We assist the student in working towards his/her maximum potential and success in school.School nurses strive to keep a child in school and learning. A healthy child is a healthy learner.

Scoliosis
Screening is mandated for students in grades 6 and 7.

The 7th grade scoliosis screening is done  by the school nurses.
If a student does not pass the scoliosis screening, a referral notice will be sent home.

Physical Examinations
Required for students entering our school as a new student or otherwise for students in kindergarten, 6th, and 11th grades.
6th grade students should have the Tdap, Meningitis, and Varicella #2 immunizations completed and documented on their 6th grade physical form. These immunizations are required for entrance into 7th grade.
It is recommended that these exams be completed by your child’s private medical provider who is familiar with your child’s medical history.  The required private physical examination form can be obtained from our website (physical form).

Dental Examination
Required of students in grades 1,3,and 7.
If a student does not pass the dental screening a referral notice will be sent home.

What does a referral mean?
If you received a referral form after any school screening or examination, it means that the screening or examination detected a possible problem and further evaluation by a professional health care provider is recommended. The referral form is to be completed by your private health care provider and returned to the  nurse.

Pennsylvania's Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
Free or Low-Cost Health Insurance for Your Kids

CHIP covers uninsured children and teens up to age 19. With more than 139,000 uninsured children in Pennsylvania, this is great news for families!

CHIP provides quality, comprehensive health insurance for routine doctor visits, prescriptions, dental, eye care, eyeglasses, mental health and much more. CHIP covers uninsured kids who are not eligible for Medical Assistance. For most families, CHIP is free – for others, it is low cost.

Many more resources can be found on the CHIP website at www.CHIPcoversPAkids.com, under CHIP Resources.

The CHIP program is pleased to partner with school districts in helping families find health insurance coverage for their children. Schools are a valuable partner in this effort. After all, healthy kids are better students.
